Basic car insurance coverages typically fall into three categories:
- Coverages that protect your car
- Coverages that protect you and your passengers
- Coverages that protect your assets and savings (liability)
- Some are required. Some are optional. All are extremely important to consider.
The Basics of Car Insurance: Your insurance policy is made of various sections of coverage to provide protection for the various types of risk you face every day while operating a motor vehicle. They include:
- Bodily Injury Liability: Coverage for any damages you do to others, i.e. injuries, and pain, and This coverage also provides your defense in the case that you are sued by the other party. FYI the defense cost is above and beyond the liability limits.
- Medical Payments: This coverage is to pay medical payments for the occupants of the vehicles without admitting liability. It usually starts at $1,000 in coverage per accident per occupant.
- Property Damage Liability: Coverage for damage you cause to someone else’s vehicle(s) and surrounding property, i.e. telephone poles and guard rails.
- Uninsured/underinsured motorist bodily injury: Coverage for you and your rider(s) if the other driver does not have insurance or their policy limits don’t pay the medical bills. Uninsured/ Underinsured motorist coverage is mandatory in Connecticut.
- Comprehensive: this coverage is to repair the car in the event of other than a collision claim, i.e. a deer strike, or a tree falls on your car while parked.
- Glass Coverage: This is coverage for any broken or cracked glass without a deductible.
- Collision: This coverage is to repair your car.
- Gap Coverage: This coverage will pay the difference between what is owed on the car and its current value, in the case that your car is totaled.
- Roadside Assistance: Roadside service and towing.
- Rental Reimbursement: Coverage to cover the cost of a rental car while your car is being repaired from an accident.
- Deductible: The amount you will pay out of pocket in the event of an accident.
Connecticut’s Minimum Required Auto Insurance Coverages:
- $25,000: Injury-related expenses per person (The total amount your insurance carrier will pay to anyone you injured in an accident).
- $50,000: Injury-related expenses per incident (The total amount your insurance carrier will pay out toward liability on anyone claim).
- $25,000: Property damage for each incident: (This covers the damage you caused to another’s vehicle and surrounding property).
How Much Coverage do I really need?
Excellent question! Given that you are at the mercy of the oncoming driver and many may be distracted, impaired, or reckless, we recommend the following:
Bodily Injury liability: Our recommendation is a minimum of $100,000 per person and $300,000 aggregate (maximum liability per accident). We highly recommend $250,000 per accident and $500,000 aggregate, and this limit is the underlying requirement for an umbrella policy.
Medical Payments: This is optional coverage and starts at $1,000 per accident per occupant and can increase to $25,000 per accident per occupant. We recommend a minimum of $5,000.
Property Damage liability: We recommend a minimum of $100,000. If you are in an at-fault chain accident and there are a couple of luxury vehicles involved in the accident, you can easily rack up $100,000 of property damage.
Uninsured/underinsured motorist bodily injury: This coverage follows Bodily injury liability coverage. We recommend a minimum of $100,000/ $300,000 and Highly recommend $250,000/$500,000.
Glass Coverage: No Charge it is part of the policy
Collision: The collision coverage is the actual cash value of your vehicle and is automatically calculated using your vehicle identification number.
Gap Coverage: In the case of your vehicle being totaled this will cover the difference between the actual cash value and the amount still owed on your loan or lease. This can provide great peace of mind to know you will not owe the bank a few thousand dollars in the case of a total loss of your vehicle.
Roadside Assistance: Again, this coverage provides a great deal of peace of mind to know roadside assistance is only a phone call away and very few dollars.
Rental Reimbursement: An optional coverage for a few dollars to rent a car when your vehicle is being repaired from an accident. Coverage begins at $25 per day and you can opt for higher.
Deductible: We recommend $500 or $1,000.
This might seem confusing but don’t worry, we are here to explain the various coverages of your policy to you!
Depending on your stage of life, your auto might be your biggest investment next to your home. It is important to make sure it is properly protected no matter where life finds you.
Of any liability claim, the pending lawsuit or the defense cost can be the most expensive part. Most people don’t realize that as long as the claim is still open, the insurance company is responsible for defending you. Once they settle, the defense closes. In an at-fault accident, if your liability coverage is low, the insurance carrier can settle the claim and have no obligation to provide a defense, leaving you to defend yourself. With the proper liability coverage, the likelihood of this occurring is slim.
